Listen: NHS GP gives top tips about baby care for new parents
New research reveals that only 1 in 3 (34%) of parents are aware of how regularly they should check a baby when sleeping, despite rising concerns over infant sleep safety. Women (38%) show higher awareness than men (30%).
Despite legislation requiring certain baby monitors to have MHRA certification a worrying 16% of people are aware of the new MHRA certification requirement for baby monitors that monitor more than video and sound, with awareness only slightly higher among younger parents aged 18-24 (26%). 28% of respondents feel confident they would notice if a baby monitor wasn’t working properly, with younger parents aged 18-24 leading in confidence at 33%. However, many are unaware of the critical MHRA certification requirements for advanced monitors. This poses a question—are safety standards for baby monitors being overlooked?”
Surprisingly, 15% of respondents didn’t know that advanced baby monitors require medical certification, while 10% believe certification only applies to a product’s electrical safety. This gap in understanding points to a potential need for clearer consumer education on product safety.
Ryan spoke to NHS GP Dr Shireen.
