Local RSPCA up for 3 Awards

The RSPCA Essex South, Southend & District Branch has been picked as finalists for three categories in a prestigious animal awards competition for the Southeast Region.

The branch is a finalist in the Animal Star Awards animal charity of the year category, Rik Moran is a finalist in volunteer of the year and Mette Summers, who covers animal welfare support at the branch , is a finalist for the main Animal Star Award.

The Animal Star Awards are now in their 10th year and were created in 2016 to give recognition to animals and humans alike for the extraordinary things that they do for one another.

Each year they reward people from all walks of the animal sector from animal rescue centres to dog walkers, pet-related businesses, and much more.

The winners of the 2026 Southeast Region will be announced at a special awards ceremony in Kent on Saturday March 21 with the branch honoured to be competing in three categories.

Samantha Beaumont, Branch Chairperson, said:

“To be recognised with nominations for the Animal Star Award, Animal Charity of the Year and Volunteer of the Year is a true honour for our branch.

“It celebrates the commitment of our hardworking team and volunteers who make a difference every day. As a small community-focused branch, we are proud to deliver local rehoming and welfare work while working closely with inspectors to protect and improve the lives of animals.”

Volunteer Rik – who has been with the branch for eight years, said:

“It was an honour just to get nominated, I never expected to get to the finalist stage. I don’t think anyone gets into Animal Rescue for thanks, it’s a very un-thanked job, so sometimes, that little bit of recognition means the world.”

Mette, who covers animal welfare support at the branch, added:

“I’m honoured to be nominated for an Animal Star Award. I love the work I do with the rescue and the animals, and this recognition means so much. Thank you to all our supporters and adopters. I’m grateful to be part of each animal’s journey toward a better life, and your kindness and support makes that possible.”

The RSPCA Essex South, Southend & District Branch is a separately registered charity – and last year they rehomed 217 cats and dogs.

The branch is committed to improving the lives of local animals and as well as offering veterinary financial assistance for those most in need, they offer advice, support and guidance and aim to promote responsible pet ownership through local microchipping and neutering campaigns.
