Parents believe their kids lack street smarts

Research has revealed that one in three (33%) parents believe their kids are less street smart than they were as children.

More than half (51%) cite lockdown as a cause, leaving housebound kids less savvy to the dangers outside the home.

More than 57% of parents believe that social media, technology (55%) and TV (43%) exposes kids to ‘grown-up’ content, with these home-based activities also leaving kids without the vital ‘street smarts’ that they picked up at the same age.

In rural communities this fear intensifies, with Spacetalk research finding that almost half of parents (45%) believing their kids are less street smart than they were at their age. Although urban parents might think their child is slightly savvier, only a quarter (23%) would let their child catch public transport solo before secondary school, compared to almost half (46%) who did the same thing when they were young.
