Students targeted by criminals to become money mules

As the saying goes; if something sounds too good to be true it probably is. Criminals are increasingly luringcash-strapped and impressionableuniversity students to act as ‘money mules’ with the promise of easy money – according to new figures.

The latest industry figures from We Fight Fraud (WFF)1 shows a growing number of students are being targeted by criminal gangs to launder money through their student bank accounts. Indeed, three in five students, aged between 18 and 24, have been approached in person or online to become a money mule.

A money mule is someone who allows criminals or fraudsters to ‘launder’ or transfer  money through their bank account in return for cash.  Some gangs use girls to find recruits at campus parties while others are lured on social media with fake offers to earn money in cash and even Bitcoin cryptocurrency.
