Tax experts say prepare now, 3 weeks from Financial Year 26-27

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) is a UK Government programme designed to modernise the taxsystem by moving income tax reporting online.

From the 6thof April 2026, the next phase of MTD or IT will apply to sole traders and landlords earning morethan £50,000 a year from self-employment or property income. Those affected will need to keep digital recordsand submit quarterly updates to HMRC, alongside an end-of-year declaration.

The first stage of the rollout is expected to affect around 850,000 people, with the programme expanding in later years as the income threshold falls-eventually bringing up to around three million taxpayersinto the system.
