Neil Gits In A Micro Mess

3rd September 2025
Posted by Neil Matthew

I can’t remember a year when I tried so many new or different things to eat – pilchards, sardines, powdered custard, bourbon biscuits, peach slices, cream crackers, apricot jam, chicken korma, neapolitan ice cream and tins of soup are all items that have found their way into my kitchen cupboard or fridge/freezer that I was sure I didn’t like from poor experiences in a distant past, but actually went down very nicely ! Food always tastes nicer when you pick it up on the cheap, but there were some quite unexpected plaeasant surprises in amongst that list …

Not everything I’ve tried has been a success though – supermarket tinned meatballs in ‘slop’ were revolting and when I gave those ridiculous Fray Bentos tinned pies a second chance I immediately regretted it. Not only was the fayre inside quite unappetising, but it took 25 minutes to force my way inside the container before I could cook it !! Another disaster was pasta in a packet, designed to be ready to eat in minutes when placed in a microwave. Yes, it was ‘done’ in five minutes but cooking pasta normally only takes ten … then it took me 20 minutes to clean up the mess it made ! The packet tore as I opened it so I placed it a glass bowl and covered it in clingfilm (which normally works well in similar situations) but that ripped too and the ‘tasty’ looking green bits went everywhere. Needless to say the resulting plastic-like rubbery gunge that emerged didn’t taste great …

It has been quite out of character for me to be so adventurous with my eating habits this year, but I have had more time on my hands than usual to experiment – and deal with the resulting mess caused by each disaster!) I am feeling quite peckish now after writing this, but I will defintiely be playing safe with dinner tonight – chicken in a creamy white sauce with sweetcorn and pasta cooked in my two favourite saucepans on the hob ! We all have different tastes in food and indeed music, but I like to think that most of my regular listeners are on ‘the same page’ as me and will have enjoyed the playlist below. If you didn’t hear it live last Monday, make sure you don’t miss the ‘Repeat Play’ on Saturday at 5pm …
