Neil Gits 1st Place … But Loses !

14th April 2024
Posted by Neil Matthew

Most people who listen to my show probably know me from my 40 plus years as a DJ, either on the radio or in pubs and clubs, before hanging my mobile disco headphones up in 2018. By then I had already built up quite a portfolio of quiz night venues and focussed primarily on that for about three years, alongside the radio, before my business was cruelly wiped out by … you know what !!

It’s really nice that now having retired from public life, quite a few of my old quizzers have kept in touch over the last few years by tuning into the show and seem to really enjoy the tunes, regularly coming out with cracking ideas they have discovered themselves for me to share on air. That old quiz buzz hasn’t completely died inside me though – as you can probably tell from the weekly “Soul Connection” feature ! Although I have no desire to retake my position on my quizmaster’s stool, I have joined a team with my son and his girlfriend to turn up this year and take part at a couple of events near where I live … with mixed results !

Last week things went pretty well for us (team name : “Better Call Saul” !) Captain Nathan steering us to 45 points out of 60 after some intense concentration and a little luck, a decent effort indeed but not normally enough to have a chance of winning. We were amazed when we found out we were joint top scorers and had to take part in a Tie Breaker with the other team (sitting right next to us – awkward !) but we couldn’t quite negotiate that final hurdle and went home empty handed. The question was about Elvis Presley – honestly, when did you ever hear him played on my show ?! Now if it had been about Luther …

There are usually a few surprises on the playlist each week, but always from the general field of soul, jazz-funk & disco – check out the latest selections below and see if you are intrigued enough to navigate the “Listen Again” page here to listen to them … and then join our happy band of music fans LIVE on Monday for the next show !
