Neil Gits A Fight For Free

Just over two years ago now, I spent a very hot Saturday night at the Basildon Sporting Village watching an evening of boxing taking place to raise funds for charity. I think there were 20 three-minute bouts in total and one of them involved my son who had been training hard for eight months in preparation for his first (and so far only!) fight. He lost, but wasn’t disgraced (not that I know anything much about the sport) and it was just something that he thought he’d try. He’s quite adventurous !

The tickets weren’t cheap and the drink prices were extortionate, but it was an interesting experience, though not one that either of us is particularly keen to repeat any time soon. Fast forward to Summer 2024 and I’ve been entertained lately in my own back garden by an epic contest between two heavyweight pigeons who I must have seen about a dozen times now going hell for leather at each other. They stand next to each other on my fences, the roof of a neighbour’s shed or, when it really kicks off, they disappear into the branches of the trees at the bottom of my garden and that’s when there is serious carnage !

I suspect that it may be an ongoing territorial battle, either that or a somewhat loveless and over vigorous mating routine (!) but it does now appear to have concluded, judging by the state of a number of feathers deposited on the ground in one corner. I have no idea who won, but it was certainly more entertaining than that hot, loud, sticky, sweaty evening at BSV … and it didn’t cost me a penny either !
