Neil Gits A Flashback

8th May 2021
Posted by Neil Matthew

As you probably know, I host “The Old Gits Soul Show” live every Monday from 7-9pm, as opposed to pre-recording it, which is common practice for other presenters doing specialist shows on other stations, so there is not automatically a big chunky file I can take home with me and save for prosperity. However, whilst hunting around for some suitable tunes to take with me on my latest road trip this week, I did discover a folder with around a dozen MP3s of my old shows from across the last ten and a half years in it and decided to copy one onto my Sony Walkman for the journey !

Of course, the songs were excellent, that goes without saying … lol … but what threw me was how different my voice sounded nine years ago (it was a Bank Holiday Special from 2012) possibly because it WAS pre-recorded, no doubt due to a clash of commitments back then at the time of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Back then we still had our old studio operating for such purposes alongside the current ones elsewhere in the Eastgate Centre, whereas now each of my live efforts is magically saved in a mysterious place by the broadcasting fairies, so on the very rare occasions I cannot be in Basildon at 7pm on a Monday, the bosses can re-run a recent show instead.

I like to think that with my “talents” being totally exclusive to Gateway over the last 14 months of “The Apocalypse” and having about six days each week to prepare a super slick programme, I come across as smooth and relaxed, but on the old pre-recorded show I sounded “so laid back I was almost horizontal” ! Mind you, being in the studio as the show goes out does give it a nice “edge” I think and the plus side for the listener is that you can laugh at all my various “slip ups” for added entertainment without them getting edited out !!

See what you think by catching this week’s “Cool Soul” selections either on Gateway 97.8FM at 5pm this afternoon (Saturday) for the ‘Repeat Play’ or heading for “Listen Again” at this website and hearing the good stuff anytime you like over the next 28 days. And of course I should be back LIVE on air this Monday ….
