I meet quite a lot of people through my work outside of hosting “The Old Gits Soul Show” on Gateway and often end up telling them about being on the radio, in the hope that now and again one or two of them might just tune in on a Monday and give it a listen. Of course, 99 times out of a 100 I will never know and just have to assume that they took my recommendation and are eagerly sitting near a speaker at 7pm every Monday just waiting to hear my next selection of soul jazz-funk and disco goodies !
But lately, I have had a steady stream of conversations with members of quiz teams from the various nights that I run that usually start with “I heard you on the radio last week …” and it would seem there are even more folk of around my age that share a love of my kind of music than I thought – so much so that a handful of them have even started passing on ideas of songs for em to play, some tried and tested “anthems”, others cool tracks that despite having followed soul music for over 40 years have evaded even my ears !
And that’s what the show is all about – playing some familiar friendly names and tunes alongside some real gems that are personal favourites that never made the “mainstream” , whether from my collection or yours, all from the wonderful world of soul music. Oh yes … and most of all enjoying the experience !!
