Neil Gits A Fly On His Food

10th August 2019
Posted by Neil Matthew

Summer. It seems to be everyone’s favourite time of year, the time we all look forward to, when everyone seems to be relaxed and happy, the season which gets more songs written about it than any other, telling us how wonderful life is and how we wish it could last forever. Certainly, a lot of the music I play on my show sounds extra special when the sun is shining, but therein lies the problem. Summer doesn’t always come hand in hand with warm sunny weather in this country ! In the Peak District last week, seriously heavy rain caused severe flash flooding and one town had to be evacuated in case a dam at the local reservoir burst !! And as I type this there seem to be 70 mph winds blowing anything that’s not nailed down all over the street and my garden – dramatic but I am not sure it enduces “happiness” …

When we do get days when the sun comes out, global warming has ensured that the temperatures get very hot, too hot – way TOO hot … reaching a level that becomes life threatening for the unprepared amongst us, and even on that odd day when the weather is “just right” for summer, life is still not perfect. Eating outside seems to be a pleasure people enjoy on a summer’s day but it doesn’t work for me. I attended a really nice function recently in my working capacity and was kindly given a lovely big plate of BBQ food – yum !! But I was unable to eat it staright away and when I got a break about ten minutes later, I turned round and it was covered in about half a dozen big hungry flies – YEUGH !! I am trying to think of one thing that I actually love about summer, but being a confirmed ‘Old Git’ I am struggling …

Still at least those good old soul tunes always sound good and you can hear some more LIVE this Monday at 7pm on Gateway or if it arrives sooner for you on reading this, repeated at 5pm on Saturday – check out “Listen Again” for some of my older shows too …
