Neil Gits A lightbulb Moment

16th November 2025
Posted by Neil Matthew

More goings on in the garage this week … or rather ‘goings off’ ! Whilst not exactly known for my practical skills or DIY prowess, I am quite capable of changing a bulb when one goes, although I was a little surprised when the one in the garage wouldn’t respond to being switched on this week. My default setting in such situations being to panic, I immediately looked at the electrical trip switch box on the wall, but nothing was amiss there so I took what should have been the obvious first course of action and fetched a new bulb !

It seemed a long time since I’d done that in the garage so I looked at the dead bulb to see if it was one of the modern energy saving LED ones or possibly an old style ‘filament’ design which you just can’t buy any more. No, sure enough it was an Asda LED one so it couldn’t have been that long ago in the 34 years of living in my house that I’d had to install it. I was immediately reminded of one of my favourite old jokes – read on !

An elderly lady calls out an electrician after discovering the light in her bathroom won’t work. The chap does a routine check of her electrics in the house for a possible fault but can’t find anything wrong, so politely asks her if she’s tried simply changing the bulb. “Oh no” she replies. “It can’t be that, I have lived here for nearly 40 years and I’ve never once had to replace the bulb in here … ” (Apologies if this contains attitudes of a sexist or ageist nature which may have been much funnier in the good old days way back in the 1970s when this joke was still reasonably young !!)

Yes, I like cheesy old jokes as well as old music, but thankfully the tunes from the 60s 70s 80s & 90s you hear on my show each week are of a much higher quality than my occasional jokes ! Take a look at last week’s playlist which you can listen to right now by visiting the ‘Listen Again’ page …
