Neil Gits A New Buckle

19th June 2023
Posted by Neil Matthew

As a fully paid up member of “The Society Of Hopeless Old Gits” I am very resistant to new ways of doing tried & trusted things in my life using modern technology, for instance, if I want to know the time I look at the watch on my wrist. I don’t pull my mobile phone out of my pocket and glance at the numbers on the screen saver – I don’t always have my phone turned on … and indeed I don’t even take it everywhere I go !!

So … when I went to put my good old simple Casio digital watch on recently and the metal clip pinged off the strap and disappeared under the sofa it was like losing a finger (although nowhere near as painful!) I recalled that about 5 years ago I had a new strap put on it at Timpsons in Maldon High Street and was really pleased with the service I got then, so I nipped into my local branch in town, but they had none of the same size straps in stock and as I was planning on going near Maldon for a carwash, I thought I might as well go back there an see if they could help again.

There was a lady in front of me who had some fiddly issue with a handbag that the chap was trying to help her with, but she let me jump in (even though I wasn’t in a hurry!) and I was told to leave it with him for 10 minutes and pop back, which was handy as I wanted to get something down the road too whilst there. When I returned, he hadn’t replaced the strap with a new one, but simply put a new buckle on it sourced from his little magic box of spares – and refused to take any payment for it !!

How refreshing in this day and age – real old school customer service ! I had a nice little chat with the “handbag lady” too and trust she was as satisfied with our man’s handywork as I was – the watch is as good as new now, just waiting for the battery to run out now, it is overdue to !!

Now you know what time it is … 7pm on Monday and it’s time for the “Old Gits Soul Show” live from Studio 1 at Gateway Towers !! I couldn’t get this blog up over the weekend due to techy issues (of course!!) so if you haven’t heard last week’s show yet , there’s still time to go to our “Listen Again” page and check it out there – here’s the playlist you missed :
