Neil Gits A New Printer

5th May 2024
Posted by Neil Matthew

Back about 6 years ago when my “Retro Quiz Nights” business was probably at its peak, I did a LOT of printing, getting through reams of A4 paper and spending a fortune on ink cartridges. I also managed to exhaust a number of printers too, having to replace about three or four machines after things really started to take off around 2010, as I began to move away from running mobile discos towards hosting quizzes. The wear & tear on them used to result in death by failure to feed the paper through or various types of erratic print quality issues making them unusable and with the high amount of use I was getting out of each one, their life cycle was only about two and a half years on average !

Now here we are in 2024 and my life has completely changed, I haven’t run a quiz since March 2020 (I was often putting on up to 5 per week then!) and my printing activity has decreased dramatically, although obviously for certain things I still use and need one at home. So when an ominous warning box kept appearing on screen this year, telling me about an “ink absorber being almost full” and to “consult my dealer for repair” (never financially worth pursuing !) I feared it was nearly time to buy a new one. That got me thinking – how long have I actually had this current model ? It turned out I bought it in February 2018 … so it has lasted over six years, three times the previous norm !

The other week, the inevitable happened, my trusty Canon MG3600 refused to print anything else, indeed it shut down so fatally, that I couldn’t even liberate the expensive half used cartridges trapped inside !! So off to Argos I went, with my ‘flexible friend’ in my pocket and shelled out on a brand new similar but slightly updated version which “only” took me just over an hour to unpack and install – it has been longer before ! – and I was back to being able to print out my two sheets a week … the information about new releases sent to me my my buddy Gary and of course the all-important playlist for the show. On a ‘busy’ week I might double that workload by producing a handy map for one of my footy road trips or maybe a knitting pattern that A13 Annie’s ordered online but either way at this rate Printer No: 5 could last me till I die !!

Talking of busy, I really need to crack on and plan tomorrow’s Monday Night live show (and then print off the playlist!) so while you wait patiently for that, why not visit our “Listen Again” page and check out any recent good stuff you may have missed in the last 28 days ?
