Neil Gits A New Switch

26th September 2025
Posted by Neil Matthew

I think my reputation as a proper ‘Old Git’ and a confirmed ‘Technophobe’ goes before me … and it is probably getting worse ! A couple of hours before my show last week, I had a phone call from one of the top brass at Gateway explaining that they had made a change in the studio area since I was last in there the previous Monday and felt it was best that they let me know in advance so that I didn’t turn up unaware. A wise decision which was much appreciated because I don’t handle any sort of change easily and can often get freaked out by such unexpected situations …

Settling down and finding a new bit of kit plugged in to the desk or a new re-vamped layout to the PC can really throw me as I am not in the station on a daily basis and a lot can happen in 7 days ! Coming in and finding that all the familiar Mp3 logos on my ex-vinyl files had changed to traffic cones was a memorable one ! It didn’t affect me technically at all – it was just plain weird and confusing ! I also once turned up and found that where there used to be a nice subtle little hand for the mouse pointer, there was now a bloody big black arrow on the screen, making it nearly impossible to click on the small boxes I need to do to play those tracks. On that occasion I surprised myself and after about half an hour of struggling figured out how to change it back to the usual setting …

But this latest change was a BIG one and if I didn’t get it right when I went through my normal ‘studio shut down’ routine I could be stuck in there for hours, using up much expensive electricity and causing a huge rise in the station’s monthly energy bill – they’d only gone and moved the light switch !! From it’s previous, slightly awkward to reach, position in the corner, it had now been moved six feet to a spot near the door. Luckily, I managed to deal with this stressful change quite comfortably and was able to leave the studio at my normal time to get home and watch the telly. I don’t know how I would have coped if I hadn’t had that call, I might possibly still be there now trying to work it all out … lol

You just don’t know what goes on behind the scenes while I am playing your weekly two hours of soul, jazz-funk & disco tunes for you to enjoy, but it nearly always comes out alright in the end – here are the last two playlists, I am afraid I’ve got a bit out of sync with my blogs lately …
