I often get ideas for songs to play passed on to me and usually they are quite inspired bringing to my attention tracks by well known artists that had passed me by or even ones by groups or singers that I had been blissfully unaware of, but all of a good quality. Some people give me a whole list and this year you may have noticed listeners getting their own temporary “spot” on the show each week as a result, for instance, “Graham’s Groove” “Bob’s Big One” or “Allan’s Long Shot”. Occasionally other regular listeners like Frates, A13 Annie, Sammy B or Popmaster Paul come up with a little gem out of nowhere (yes I HAVE given all my loyal “fans” nicknames !! lol) but someone completely surprised me the other week with a fabulously funky soulful disco tune from 1979 they had heard once somewhere – which was once more than I had !
It was suggested by Gateway’s very own David Webster who often hosts the drivetime show before me on a Monday and is much younger than me, but has good ears and knew that it would be perfect for my soul show, despite him being unlikely to have been visiting discotheques when the record was first released ! I tracked it down, obtained a copy and played it on one of my recent shows to good effect – you can judge for yourself how snugly it sat on one of my recent paylists by going to “Listen Again” on here – the song was called “You Can Win” by Bileo, a soul & disco band from the USA (that was pretty much everything I could find out about them !)
If you stumble across a soul, jazz-funk or disco tune from the 70s or 80s (maybe even the 90s or 60s) and you think I should give it an airing, get in touch by texting (01268)833978 emailing [email protected] or post a message on “The Old Gits Soul Show” page on Facebook and I will give it the once over.
