Neil Gits A Surprise On TV

24th July 2021
Posted by Neil Matthew

Over the last 10 years, maybe more, I’ve spent the majority of my working life hosting quiz nights, so you can perhaps understand that despite increasing my TV viewing by about 500% since March 2020, shows like “The Chase” or “Eggheads” just weren’t going to be part of my “schedule”. They were just too painful to watch having seen such a big part of my world reduced to nothing over the last 18 months.

However, when I turned up for ‘Telly Time’ at A13 Annie’s house on Thursday, she said she had recorded a couple of episodes of “Pointless” that I MUST see, so intrigued, I settled back on my sofa and waited to find out what was so special about them. The answer was soon staring me in the face – there was Gateway’s own daytime presenter Aston Avery proudly standing at a podium along with his dad as contestants !! Though I struggle to deal with the “back to front” nature of the format, I quickly mastered the two music rounds, pretty much predicting everything that worked out there, but I have to take my hat of to The Averys as they did brilliantly on the film and books rounds, where I was clueless, never mind ‘pointless’… I won’t spoil it for you if you haven’t seen it yet … but they were looking even prouder in episode two than at the start of episode one !

It is highly unlikely that you will see me on television appearing on “Tipping Point” or “Tenable” or the like, but who knows one day I might feel brave enough to step out in public again after such a massive change in my lifestyle and pick up the mic at a pub quiz somewhere. For now though I am more than content to hide away out of sight in Studio One at Gateway from 7-9pm each Monday night and play two hours of terrific soul, jazz, funk, disco and reggae for you to enjoy, stress free !
