Neil Gits A Trolley

18th August 2022
Posted by Neil Matthew

I’ve been doing my weekly shopping online for well over two years now, using the Click & Collect service at Asda, and even though I don’t actually have to these days, I’ve got used to it and and it seems to suit me better to choose my items off the website and have one of the “colleagues” pick ‘n’ pack them, rather than going back and forth, up and down the aisles hunting for stuff that might not even be there ! I don’t do “substitutions” – no Asda staff member could ever get inside my muddled head to work out what might make the ideal replacement in that scenario ! – so I have got into the habit of dropping into Tesco or Sainsburys to fill any gaps, in and out without even a shopping basket most times for that odd packet of biscuits or tin of tomatoes … shopping sorted 2022 stylee !!

BUT … this week due to a “technical glitch in the system” it all went pear shaped and by Monday morning when I was due to fill up my fridge and freezer, my latest order having been ‘cancelled’ so I had to go in store and start from scratch ! I found a trolley near my car which was lucky because I then remembered that I needed to search for a £1 coin to release it and having dealt with that, got halfway across the car park before realizing that they don’t give you any bags any more, so again returned tot he car to pull a couple out of the drop down. Once actually inside the store, I was way out of practice, wobbling along each section never quite sure if I might run over someone’s foot or not or crash into a pile of tins displayed on a corner !! No it is NOT “just like riding a bike” – two years away from the wheels and I was all over the place ! But in the end, they had everything on my list (even if marmalade had been moved from one end right down to the other since I last bought it off he shelf …) and I got through the checkout, sanity intact. I am sure it will be easier next time, but I do hope that “glitch” has been well & truly fixed ….

Luckily any stress caused by that unexpected start to the week had seeped away by 7pm and I think my show was nicely chilled out with some delicious tunes given an airing. If you didn’t hear it, see what you make of it, either by going to “Listen Again” here on the website and hunting down “Cool Soul” or hold on till 5pm on Saturday when the ‘Repeat Play’ hits the schedules. These are the tracks played last Monday …
