Neil Gits Back Into Cricket

21st July 2023
Posted by Neil Matthew

It’s been tough keeping my obsession for football fed since May. I’ve been living off scraps of England’s Euro Qualifiers and Women’s International Matces in between endless scrolling through interesting looking You Tube videos and streaming behind-the-scenes documentaries about any players or club that was willing to open up to the cameras. I did try going to a “friendly” match last Saturday, but apart from having a superb bacon & cheese burger there, it just wasn’t the same as “the real thing”. Luckily, one or two of the Lower leagues start next week so I’ll check the fixtures and have my camera and the “Neil-mobile” at the ready …

To my surprise, after several years of almost no interest whatsoever, my need for competitive sport to get excited about has been met by cricket, in particular the thrilling Ashes Series between England & Australia. I have “A13 Annie” to thank for this – she was a huge cricket fan when I first met her, but her enthusiasm soon waned, especially when Sky put their subscription prices up and up to a ridiculous level. But out of the blue she got a good deal from them just to watch the channel showing the Ashes and it’s paid off handsomely ! To my amazement I quickly recalled all the rules and terminology, though it seems that since I last watched a match on TV, they’ve started calling a ‘Batsman’ a ‘Batter’ in these politically correct times that us Old Gits have to try and adjust to … say no more !

Of course, spending even more time preparing my show and checking out fresh tunes to play for you has been another option to fill football-free weekends and one look at the latest playlist will have you saying to yourself “Wow! He’s dug up some golden soulful nuggets this week !” Take a look below and hear how great they sound on the radio in this week’s “Repeat Play” at 5pm this and every Saturday, LIVE on Mondays at 7pm …
