Neil Gits Back To Berlin

25th April 2020
Posted by Neil Matthew

Not literally of course – that would prove a tad difficult at the moment ! But in the course of sharing my huge backlog of football ground photos with fellow like-minded folk on Facebook, I reached May 2018 when I took Nathan to the German capital on an extra special mission to see the Bundesliga match between Hertha Berlin & RB Leipzig at the historic Olympic Stadium (1936 games, Hitler, salutes and all that !) and have been reliving some fantastic memories of a brilliant adventure all week.

We naturally stayed over night, so it wasn’t just about the Big Match, we also got in a brilliant day’s sight-seeing – The Brandenburg Gate, The Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie and of course the poignantly grafitti-decorated remnants of The Berlin Wall, as well as a trip up the Fernsehturm at sunset to see the whole city and all its many other landmarks from way up high. If you have only ever been on “sunshine holidays” abroad to the likes of Ibiza or Kos, spending all week on a beach or in a hotel bar – you are missing out on some amazing travel experiences ! I do recommend exploring some of the major cities in some of the most historic countries in Europe (or beyond!) for some memories you will never forget – once we are all allowed outside our front door again ! Try and find me on Facebook to see all my many, many photos for yourself and feed your inspiration …

Basildon has some notable landmarks too of course … The Mother & Child Fountain in the town square, The ‘Hollywood’ sign on the A127, the legendary leisure centre “Bas Vegas” and my favourite from when I was a kid the mysterious “Onion” but I think we have to agree that the best thing about the town is Gateway 97.8 !! And that is where you can enjoy top quality soulful nostalgia every Monday at 7pm on my show where I present two hours of great music from the wonderful days of the 70s & 80s and beyond – take a listen to the repeat play if you are reading this today, from 5-7pm or alternatively “Listen Again” whenever you fancy. Times may change, memories live forever …
