Neil Gits Back To Saltburn

24th April 2022
Posted by Neil Matthew

I try not to involve my football ground visits too often when coming up with themes for this weekly ramble, otherwise officially known as my “Show Blog”. I am aware that not everybody who shares my love of soul music will also understand my alternative passion for trekking round the country photographing stadiums and terraces, but I am sure we all love to get away and discover new places to visit with stunning scenery, whether in the UK or abroad.

Eleven years ago, I took myself away on a much needed break for a couple of days and eneded up in Redcar, a smashing little seaside town on the North-East coast also known for its racecourse and being the filming location of the Kate Winslet wartime movie “Atonement”. Winding my way back home down the coast towards Whitby & Scarborough, I stumbled upon an amazing place called Saltburn-By-The-Sea, just made to take photos of, but I couldn’t stop back then and vowed to return one day. Easter Saturday was that day ! On a footy mission on Teeside, I stayed in the very same BnB as I had in 2011, still run by the same family, and having had an equally enjoyable time as back then (but with a great top of the table match thrown in for good measure this time !) I recalled Saltburn and having checked the map, sure enough it was a just a stone’s throw away (almost!) so on a beautiful sunny evening, off I headed.

If you like hills, cliffs, classic victorian style buildings and of course a fabulous straditional old seaside pier, find me on Facebook and take a look at my set of pictures. If however, you are only interested in terrific tunes from the 70s & 80s era of soul, jazz-funk and disco, simply tune in to Gateway LIVE this Monday at 7pm and enjoy the show ! Remember, you can also check out other recent episodes from the last 28 days at our “Listen Again” section under ‘Cool Soul’ … here’s the latest playlist :
