Neil Gits Back To Spain

27th February 2021
Posted by Neil Matthew

No, I have not slipped through customs and achieved the impossible by getting a plane to whisk me away to the Costa Del Sol ! But I was there in spirit this week as I continued another “stuck at home indoors” project. I might have mentioned before that I have developed a love of jumping into my car and disappearing around the country with my camera in recent years, then sharing the fruits of my labours with all my Facebook buddies. That is quite easy now with the advent of digital cameras & phones that take photos, but up until 2009 I was still using film and the big drawback with that compared to now was that there was a limit to the number of pictures you could take. For instance, if I had a 24 picture roll of film and I visited 8 football grounds, I would only take 3 photos of each one – not ideal, especially if one came out all blurry or my thumb got in the shot !!

But as technology moved on, for about the last ten years of using film, you had the option of having a CD made of your pictures when getting the film developed, which I did, as I now had my first computer and one day might work out how to get those old shots shared with the world – that day has arrived !! I have spent the last few weeks going through those years, labelling and filing and in some cases researching online for details of places I’d forgotten about and the first set went up online earlier this week – a three day break I took with my then 2 year old son (he is 17 now !) and his mum in October 2005 to visit ex-Billericay friends of ours who were then living near Fuengirola, just up the Costa from Marbella. I never thought I would get nostalgic about a year in the 21st Century, but it all brought back a lot of interesting memories, so if you would think a bunch of photos of donkeys, a cable car, a mountain, some boats and some very orangey red appartments in the south of Spain would work for you too, feel free to check them out on Facebook !

Of course, the REAL nostalgia is to be had by engrossing yourself in two hours of soul, jazz-funk & disco tunes from and inspired by the golden era of the 70s & 80s as played by yours truly on this here radio station from 7pm each Monday. Catch the repeat play at 5pm today or if you missed it, head for “Listen Again” via the tab at the top of this page and enjoy the memories straight away ….
