Neil Gits Blacked Out

26th November 2023
Posted by Neil Matthew

I remember when I first started using a computer at home for preparing my quiz nights back around 2003, my girlfriend at the time (who was way ahead of me and doing an advanced IT course at Basildon College) warned me about facing “The Blue Screen Of Death” now and again. It was quite frightening the first time it appeared, but as I got more and more proficient, I became fairly confident in dealing with such little inconveniences whilst working alone at home …

Twenty years on, the girlfriend is long gone, and in PC terms I have probably become someone who still uses a “chalk & slate board” with technological ‘improvements’ constantly leaving me on the starting blocks scratching my head. In my own little computer environment I am quite comfortable with how I do things and can handle most situations without much stress … until last Monday morning !

It wasn’t a blue screen but a black screen of death that greeted me when I went to check my emails soon after getting up and having done all the routine checks when such issues as a local power cut mess up my day and resolved nothing, I noticed that although I couldn’t see anything, the PC was still humming & whirring and responding with its little warning & notification noises when I pressed anything. “Aha ! I have a literal screen of death – it has died, it is no more, it has ceased to be …. ” I thought and Plan B was activated – unplug it and head for my local friendly computer repair shop to seek their wise words of advice …

I am glad to report that I was back home and operating as though nothing had happened within 20-30 minutes ! They confirmed my old screen had “passed on” and as luck would have it, they had another almost identical re-furbished second hand one just looking for a new home. £15 was removed from my bank account (result!) and suddenly a gloomy Monday morning didn’t look so bad !

Monday evenings are never gloomy !! Whichever week you tune in to my soul show, you can guarantee on two hours of uplifting soul, jazz-funk & disco music to brighten any mood you may be in, along with all the fabulous features and fascinating facts you need to stimulate and invigorate your mind … and if you missed last week’s therapy session, catch up with these tunes by investigating our “Listen Again” section …
