I’ve lived in South Woodham Ferrers for just over 30 years now and shopped in the large Asda Superstore there at least twice a week ever since moving there, but I can’t recall EVER buying anything from the petfood aisle before. I personally have never had an animal living in my house (nor do I want to !) although an old girlfriend many years ago did move in briefly and brought her rabbit with her, but that stayed outdside in a hutch and was totally her responsibility !!
My current partner has a cat – a big FAT one that eats a LOT ! – and as she is not at her house much, if ever, during the daytime has got into the habit of ordering his catfood online and have it delivered to my house, where I am constantly preparing radio shows and quiz nights all day. This is fine. I can deal with that quite easily. But in the current climate she was having difficulty finding the cat litter she uses in her local Tesco stores, so asked if I could have a look in Asda and also the big new Sainsburys that recently opened up down the road. No problem …
So I bobbed down to the town centre and found myself in the unchartered territory of the pets aisle, surrounded by all manner of food & treats for cats, dogs and other furry alien creatures – but could not see “cat litter”. A very kind lady, clearly a cat lover herself, explained that it wasn’t in this aisle as “cats don’t actually EAT litter” (I had wondered why Jasper was always kicking it all over the kitchen floor and not gleefuly consuming it from his bowl along with every other flavour of meat & fish known to mankind…) and she pointed out it was more appropriately placed in the next aisle along, right next to where the toilet rolls used to be before the apocalypse arrived …
Sadly, they didn’t have the exact type of litter I was instructed to locate, in fact there was quite a large gap on those shelves, the same as at Sainsburys here they had even less to choose from. Mission failed. It seems that not only humans are anticpating their bowels to open wider and more regularly as the virus spreads !! In the end Tesco came up trumps the next day and all was well in cat-world again …
No, this has nothing to do with soul music or my show, but I thought a little anecdote from “The Life Of The Old Git” might put a smile on your face … as I hope will this week’s show, repeated at 5pm on Saturday and available NOW via “Listen Again”.
