Neil Gits Cut Off

2nd February 2026
Posted by Neil Matthew

There are so many things we take for granted in life. 364 days a year you jump in your car and drive off, then one day, nothing happens, it won’t start ! For a few minutes you might sit there completely stumped until you compose yourself, make a phone call to a friend (ideally one with a big orange van and a laptop !) and eventually all is well again. Maybe it will be a household appliance that you’ve had for years, like a washing machine, routinely throwing your clothes into it, week after week, then suddenly it won’t play ball. Your life comes grinding to a halt ! Plans have to be changed, arrangements remade …

The most disconcerting situation of all I find is a power cut. Where I live we are prone to the odd brief outage now and again, but of course it always comes as a surprise. It’s even worse when it happens on a dark evening though, which is what happened to me recently. Almost everything in my house relies on electricity, like most people, and when it went off around 6pm the whole house went quiet & pitch black, although strangely the little red standby light on the TV stayed on – but that wasn’t any help and I still couldn’t do anything … at all !

Luckily, I am an incredibly organized person and know exactly where to find a torch, always kept in the same place in the middle of my house for such an emergency, picked up the key for the garage, where the fuse box, is and investigated. Once outside my front door, I realized the whole street was in the same boat, so I felt confident the local power company would have it sorted in a short while, which they did about ten minutes later, but for that brief period my whole world just stopped on the spot !

I am going to have to cut this blog off in full flow now too – I have a lot of preparation to do for my next show and want to make sure you have two hours of the very best soul, jazz-funk & disco tunes ready for you this week – I know it would leave a big gap in your life if I didn’t !
