Neil Gits Digging

8th July 2023
Posted by Neil Matthew

I mentioned on the show a couple of weeks back that when I have a brilliant idea for a long forgotten soul track to play on the show, my first job is to see if I’ve definitely got it on vinyl in my record library. If I have (which isn’t always the case !) I gleefully take it off the shelf and admire what pristine condition it is in and wallow in nostalgia for a few minues trying to remember where I would have bought it and at which venues I would have played it. But the next move is NOT to pull the record out of its sleeve and give it a spin surprisingly ….

I don’t have a readily available working standard turntable at “Old Gits HQ” unfortunately, so if I want to play a slice of good old vinyl I have to fix up my USB one and connect it up to the office PC which is a bit of a cafuffle for just one song, so I slide the record halfway back into its place on the shelf and wait until I have at least half a dozen ‘sticking out’ and then listen to & record several tunes in one session. Except it’s not just six or seven protruding now – more like 30 or 40 … and my basic grasp of physics can see a disaster looming !!

To avoid my library transforming into a scene resembling the aftermath of an earthquake, I have stepped up my vinyl to MP3 recording and made a couple of slots on each show available purely to play a song or two which I won’t have aired for around 40-45 years in some cases !! Naturally whilst doing this I have turned up some real nuggets and it’s now got to the stage where I am reaching deep into the very bowels of my collection, digging for soul gold !!

I reckon there must be four such songs on this week’s show – take a look at the playlist below to see if you can spot them, then if you’ve not caught the show already this week, listen to the ‘Repeat Play’ on Gateway at 5pm this evening (Saturday) and keep an ear out for those wonderful vinyl crackles, though there won’t be a lot – I looked after my precious records very well back in the day …
