It’s no secret to regular listeners of my show that I am a keen football fan and love visiting teams in the lower levels to see matches and photograph their homes. Not having been able to catch any action live in the flesh for so long, you can imagine I had quite a list of places I wanted to go by the the time the very first round of the FA Cup came around last Saturday and was longing to hear the click of the turnstiles as I entered the ground, feel a shiny new matchday programme in my hands, see the corner flags flapping in the breeze and smell the burgers cooking in the food bar. It’s teams at the level of East Thurrock United / Bowers & Pitsea or below that I enjoy going to the best, but the “Extra Preliminary Round” of the FA Cup is too early even for small clubs like them and having been to virtually every club in Essex over the years, I was struggling to find a match to see that was not too far away from home for my return pitchside.

Problem solved ! A good look through the fixtures brought up Stanway Rovers just this side of Colchester, and what a good choice it was ! I really enjoyed the occasion all round, especially as the home side scored a late winning goal and I was in the perfect spot at the time to see it close up ! Now I hope to continue to work through my very long “must do” list every Saturday whenever practical – I’ve been deprived of my fix too long ! – and like you, I may well find myself on the way home within eearshot of Gateway 97.8FM in the car between 5pm & 7pm and be able to hear at least some of the ‘Repeat Play’ of my show. You can of course also listen online whenever you wish via the “Listen Again” section of this website, but there’s nothing like hearing top tunes in the car on the radio after taking in a good footy match !
