Neil Gits Gardening

17th July 2021
Posted by Neil Matthew

“Neil” and “Gardening” are not two words that the majority of people who know me would put in the same sentence ! Over the years since buying my house in 1991, what can only be described as a wild jungle gradually appeared until four years ago when, with a nice little inheritance from my late mother sitting in my bank account, I decided enough was enough !! I spent quite a few quid employing professional help to completely clear the back garden and then very sensibly having the vast majority of it covered in low-maintenance artficial grass, then added the finishing touches – a football goal and a couple of training aids to help young Nathan refine his footy skills !

Alas, here we are in 2021 and despite diligently applying copious amounts of strong weed killer at the time before having the new turf laid, all four sides have been well and truly invaded by huge clumps of varying shades of green weedery. I took a good look out the window and decided something MUST be done soon … so I looked up some numbers of local gardeners and went out to the much smaller front garden instead with a rusty pair of garden shears and hacked away at some much more manageable greenage which was threatening to block the public pavement and also invade my front room. Fifteen minutes later I was done … and done-in ! It hadn’t solved the issues at the back, but at least I felt better for making a start (despite aching rarely used arm muscles) – and will be on the phone to get it ALL done properly soon !!

I am always getting messages about how people like listening to my show on nice evenings in their gardens, it conjures up a pleasant chilled-out image in my mind, and this weekend is the perfect weather to do just that (weeds permitting!!). Your choice is the ‘Repeat Play’ at 5pm this Saturday afternoon on 97.8FM … or you can head for the “On Air” section of this site and select ‘Cool Soul’ via ‘Listen Again’ to listen and enjoy at your leisure.
