Neil Gits His Slippers Ready

13th February 2021
Posted by Neil Matthew

It’s usually only a couple of times a year that snow throws up something else to consider into the equation, but last Monday was definitely one of them ! With a fair amount of the white stuff falling outside my home on Saturday and Sunday, but not enough to concern me about being able to reach the studio for my show, I wondered just how hard Basildon would have been hit. I know from past experience that Billericay & Brentwood always cop it worse than Wickford & South Woodham Ferrers, so what would I be facing on arrival at Gateway HQ ??

I feared a snowy icy car park on arrival, so ditched my usual “best shoes” that I normally wear, with their complete lack of grip on the soles, and braced my new “walking boots” for an adventure, bought last autumn with future “Wednesday Wandering” in mind, but only worn two or three times so far ! However, I felt they might be a little too “clumpy” to be comfortable in whilst on air, so I also squeezed in a pair of comfy slippers into my bag, along side the trusty box of CDs and a bottle of Pepsi – ready for anything now !

In actual fact, I hardly saw a flake of snow on my way in or in Basildon itself and the boots proved unexpectedly comfy, so they stayed on for the duration – it was afterwards that they were REALLY needed ! During the two hours I was enjoying another fine selection of soul, jazz-funk and disco tunes with my lovely listener, down it all came again and I emerged from the building to find everything including my car now TOTALLY WHITE !!

I hope your week didn’t involve any snow and ice horror stories and that you are keeping snug indoors, ready for the next installment of “Cool Soul” . You can hear the “fine selection” repeated on Gateway this Saturday evening at 5pm … or “Listen Again” at your leisure elsewhere on this website. I’ll be back again at 7pm on Monday, with or without slippers, for the next new show crammed full of the good stuff …
