You can get a slight adrenalin rush when driving on the wrong side of the road, especially when it’s one you know very well, even if it’s only for a short stretch due to temporary traffic lights – it just feels so naughty ! At present there are major roadworks taking place outside Gateway HQ with Southernhay often closed to most traffic after dark, which could be a bit of an issue for this Old Git wishing to return home from Basildon once my show finishes at 9pm.
However, last week what could have been a a bit of a sticky situation turned into a little adventure when I emerged from the car park to be met by a chap in his bright orange work gear who directed me to turn RIGHT instead of left as normal on the one way system- eek !! “Head for the bloke in the yellow” he suggested and low and behold another chap in an equally bright unmissable outfit appeared from the bus station – alongside two big buses and what looked in the poor light like some sort of tank ! “Follow the buses up to the roundabout and you’ll be fine” were his instructions – and I wasn’t going to argue, although my head was telling me after ten years and hundreds of trips going the RIGHT way along Southernhay, that this was WRONG and possibly a bit dangerous. But no, the citrus fruit suited gentlemen knew just what they were doing and one slightly confusing slow crawl across the Town Centre I was back on familiar tarmac and heading home.
Even after ten years of shows for Gateway, this was another new experience for me and having duly marked the station’s 10th Anniversary in style last week, this week it will be a more personal landmark to shout about when I host my 500th show ! Expect lots of soul, jazz-funk & disco goodies from the 70s 80s & beyond and a few wonderful memories to share in between … LIVE from 7pm this Monday and online via “Listen Again” thereafter.
