Neil Gits Inside A Forest

13th June 2021
Posted by Neil Matthew

It may be warm, dry & sunny today as you read this, but last Friday was very, VERY wet (Actually, it was quite warm too …) -and I was out on the road in it most of the day ! I had hoped to have my regular “wander” earlier in the week, but I had other matters to prioritize first as the sun shone brightly outside and decided to postpone my escape from the four walls of “Old Gits HQ” for a couple of days. Wrong decision !!

My original plan was to drive up to the Suffolk coast and treat myself to some tasty fish ‘n’ chips there after taking a nice stroll breathing in the sea air, but with the weather taking a turn for the worst, I changed my mind as soon as I hit a huge tailback on the A130 disrupting my planned trip north on the A12 and went back into “90s mode” when road trips consisted of simpy following my nose and road signs and seeing where I ended up … and after turning left instead of right onto the A12 then heading up the A414 towards Harlow, that destination turned out to be Epping Forest ! I think I passed through in daylight once before on a divertion off the M25 due to a big pile up and I had definitely done a DJ gig at a hotel right in the middle, but that was at night and very dark, so exploring it was a rare new Essex experience for me- and it is huge !!

I pulled over in the car park opposite the venue where I had once worked and studied my map for a suitably scenic & adventurous route home and once I had re-charged my batteries with a packet of crisps and a chocolate biscuit (no fish n chips alas!) I glanced through my newspaper, then made sure I was re-loaded with soulful tunes and headed off on the return leg. Not my most ambitious trip and there was no chance of taking any decent photos in the weather, but it did the job and got me out of the house, plus, naturally, I came up with a few more top tune ideas for my next show on Gateway !!

I will be live on air tomorrow (Monday) from 7-9pm, but if you can’t wait until then for your two hour fix of soul, jazz-funk & disco tunes from the 70s 80s & beyond, head for the “Listen Again” section on here and see if there is any “Cool Soul” you may have missed out on.
