Neil Gits Migrated

16th March 2026

I am much more of a words person than a numbers one. The English language is a never ending source of mystery and intrigue and it’s quite amazing that so many people around the world try to use it as a second choice after their native tongue with all its bewildering quirks ! In my world of football I have noticed that the terminology being used has evolved dramatically in the last couple of years and left me scratching my very nearly bald head at times …

A “counter attack” now seems to be referred to as being “in transition” and “defending deep” has become ‘using a low block’. I quite liked it when ‘parking the bus’ was commonly used for that latter tactic but now the game seems to have gone a bit too ‘clever clever’ with its lingo. You watch some managers’ team talks in the dressing room on You Tube and they might as well be talking Bulgarian – no wonder the poor simple players sit there looking totally bemused !

So many areas of our lives have seen confusing changes in the way we refer to things lately. As a 60-something Old Git I frequently have to stop younger people when talking to them while going about my daily business, either in person or on the phone, and ask them what they actually mean ! For example, my internet provider has just switched the email part of their business to another company and every day for the last few months when I try to open my inbox I get a message explaining that “webmail may be slower while your account is currently in migration” – a strange way of putting it, but I got the gist and they were right about one thing .. it certainly has been slower using my emails since the Autumn !

So, clearly using fancy language doesn’t make life any more efficient, but every Monday you can rely on hearing the ‘Old Gits Soul Show’ with your humble presenter using words and phrases that we’ve all been perfectly happy with over the last 50+ years whilst enjoying soul, jazz-funk & disco music from the 70s 80s 90s and beyond.
