It is a fair assumption that having been a “DJ” most of my working life, I would be comfortable speaking in public in any situation – not so !! I remember when I was chairman of Billericay Town FC Supporters Club I would dread the AGMs as my hands would shake like a jelly in a hurricane, trying to read my notes as I had no microphone to hold and no disco decks to “hide” behind ! Singing is another matter altogether and as one of the venues I run my quiz nights at was holding a karaoke evening last Saturday, A13 Annie & I thought it would be a good idea to go along and support it, maybe doing a song or two to help things along if people were too shy. Well, firstly it was quite busy and secondly, nobody was shy, but all the same we got press-ganged into doing a duet or two by the regulars. I then remembered that very few songs are in the right key for me, and even those that start off OK seem to change for no reason halfway through !! You would think that loving soul music I would want to sing something by Luther Vandross or Stevie Wonder or such like, but having hosted karaoke nights many years ago when they were a new fad, I learnt very quickly that I cannot sing soul, much as I’d love to !! Confession time – my best bet is an Elton John or Billy Joel song … or anything country !!! It was a fun evening though and I even met up with one of my regular listeners “Sammy B” who had read about it on Facebook and who could sing much better than me !
