If you listen to my show regularly, you will be well aware by now that there are not many aspects of technological development that I embrace with open arms ! Big corporate websites totally bamboozle me, I can’t get to grips with lap tops, I struggle with anything that involves a ‘touch screen’ and I often end up in a fight with “self scanning” machines in supermarkets. Recently, I even decided to trade in my “not so smart” phone for something even more basic instead of ‘upgrading’ it like all around me were encouraging me to …
However, there are the odd exceptions and one of the online tools I get a,lot of use from is “Google Earth”. You will NEVER catch me using a Sat Nav in the car, I have been driving for well over 40 years now and know my way around the country very well, particularly the South-East, so a simple local map printed and studied before leaving home will get me to any chosen destination easily, allowing me to keep both eyes on the road ahead at all times and take in the scenery without some annoying artificial voice nagging away in my earhole whilst tryin to enjoy my in-car music …
“Google Earth” though is a very handy addition though, especially when doing one of my longer football trips into unknown territory, allowing me to identify handy landmarks en route, like a pub or a petrol station (even if the names have changed sometimes since the camera was last there !) and also searching out good options for off-street parking to save any panic looking for a spot with kick-off time aproaching ! It’s also good for “having a good look” at more distant football grounds, way up in the Highlands of Scotland or way down in Cornwall which I may never actually get round to visiting in person – if you are really clever you can even create a “photo” and pretend you took it yourself, although I always come clean and give a credit in the description attached. Nearly always .. !
If you have time on your hands you can travel the world, ‘driving’ down a busy street in the Far East, ‘walking’ through a remote village in South America or ‘exploring’ amazing landscapes almost anywhere else in the world. It’s also handy for tracking down those eye-catching filming locations seen in a TV show or film – and realizing just how cunning they can be fooling you into thinking one place is somewhere totally different entirely ! But what we’ve all done first on there is try to find our own house – and probably have a nosey in nearby neighbours’ gardens too …
It’s been quite a while since I did that, but I had a look a few weeks ago after realizing nature has made quite a change to my front garden over the years I have lived here and I was sure I never used to have a hedge between my house & next door !! The footage had changed since my last visit to “Old Gits HQ” , much more recent, and my current car was on the drive unlike before, but somehow and for some reason the number plate had been ‘blurred’ which seems to be quite a common practice in these days of constant data protection and information privacy all around us, though I certainly never asked the “Google Driver” to do that !
Meanwhile, inside the house, I have once again been very busy tracking down unplayed tunes and organizing fun-packed features for the show. We are into a new month now so expect one or two slight tweaks along the way on Monday, but you can still hear all of November’s shows by heading to the “Listen Again” page …
