Neil Gits Robbed !

Being an “Old Git” it will come as no surprise to you to learn that me and technology are simply not good friends – and I may just have mentioned that on the show once or twice ! Whether it is using a touch screen, negotiating an automated phone service, trying to get my Fire TV to behave or navigating the minefields of modern websites, stress is never far away …

I had a particularly bad week just recently when popping into four of the local major supermarkets inside eight days for random odd bits & pieces on my travels and each time I got in to a pickle at the self-scanning point and had to wait for assitsance from an actual human being ! To top it all, on the fourth occasion I had already had a row outside the store with an ATM machine, trying to draw out cash so didn’t exceed my shopping budget and go overdrawn using my bank card.

I am not stupid, I have used these things thousands of times over the years, but it seems harder to read the instructions displayed these days and of course it often involves touchscreen skill, which is a big weakness of mine, but I had done everything right, took my card & receipt when instructed and waited patiently for my cash, which took a little longer. Alas when it did suddenly pop out it caught me off-guard for a split second and the moment I went to pull the notes out and put them safely in my pocket, it snatched them back again !!!

I may possibly have said a naughty word and rushed inside for assistance, where the staff were very good, super calm and very confident I would get my money back immediately if I contacted my bank, which I did once home and indeed got my account refunded, albeit after a conversation with a nice lady which was filled with waffle and jargon about security procedures and data protection that I zoned out of once I had been assured I wasn’t going overdrawn. Bravely, I used the same machine yesterday and a chap in an official looking uniform with all the trimmings was taking photos of it and said he was looking into a fault that may need rectifying. You don’t say !! At least I know on this occasion it wasn’t just me and my wobbly old head for once ….

Find solace from the Modern World and all its frustrations by relaxing with my show each week, full of top tunes from the good old days, either live on Monday at 7pm or on the ‘Repeat Play’ at 5pm on Saturday ….
