Neil Gits Saucy

I’ve never claimed to be a healthy eater, I like fast food, especially burgers, and virtually live off ready meals out of the freezer. What about my ‘five a day’ vegetables ? I’d say that was probaly covered by the number of chips I eat in a week, I don’t eat anything green … apart from mint chocolate ice cream ! I feel I’ve become quite a connoisseur on this area of food and recently I have been quite adventurous, looking at some alternatives available to your traditional condiments and sides …

Everyone knows that when it comes to tomato ketchup, it HAS to be Heinz, and their Classic Smokey BBQ sauce is almost untouchable, although I do have a soft spot for McDonalds’ version too. My football trips have introduced me to the delights of ‘burger sauce’ too and before Xmas a visit to KFC brought ‘spicy mayo’ to my attention, whilst I have even been tempted to ‘go European’ and try mayonnaise on my chips occasionally. Bottles of all these sauces currently reside inside my fridge, but going back to the TK, my current bottle is by … shock horror ! … Daddies !! It’s a pretty close match to Heinz, but works out much cheaper, try it sometime …

At a cafe last week, I picked up a sachet of ketchup I’d never heard of before. It was a very large size and squeezed out just enough to cover my whole meal of fishfingers and chips, something that would take you at least three regular size sachets from a chain pub restaurant. The trouble was it tasted horrible !!! Like thousands of other people, Iam a sucker for a cheeky Nando’s from time to time and they have already introdcued their special sauces to the supermarkets. Walking round Iceland this week I spotted a bottle of Nando’s ‘perinaise’ and now I can’t wait to go back and pick one up and see what that tastes like too ! Writing this I am now getting nostalgic for other products I haven’t seen for ages, like Asda’s prawn coleslaw and Reggae Reggae sauce on chicken, but let’s move on …

Apologies if you thought this blog was going to be full of cheeky English seaside humour – it’s not that kind of saucy ! However, as soul music is 95% about love and consequently its subject matter can get quite sexy, there are always one or two songs I play that lyrically set off the “oo-er missus” response in my brain ! Have a close listen to this week’s tunes on the ‘Repeat Play’ at 5pm this Saturday (today!) to judge for yourself if the Gateway ‘bleeper’ should possibly have been employed … lol
