Neil Gits Scalped !

30th October 2020
Posted by Neil Matthew

Like many people I went a long time this year without having a haircut, not that I really have much left to cut, but what I did have evolved into something rather magical, so that when it did actually become possible to have a trim, I chose not to. My personal issues mean it is impractical to go into a barbers – and I don’t have any money to spend in one anyway ! – but I had rather grown to like my new “wild” look and was finding it very comforting to run my fingers through the hair on the back of my head, something I’ve not been able to do since I was in my 20s !!

However, A13 Annie although finding my new look mildly amusing at first, was now getting itchy fingers and as she is one of a very select number of people who actually get to see me these days, it felt only fair to let her loose with her clippers. And off it came … then some more … then nearly ALL of it, leaving me with possibly the thinnest layer of hair I have ever had on my ageing head – and just as it has started to get a little cold out too !!

It got me thinking, just what hairstyle does the typical “soul fan” have ? My memories of being at parties in the 70s & 80s have left images in my head of dancefloors being filled at various times with perms, crew cuts, wedges and even the dreaded mullets as punters danced to my soul & disco tunes. A flick through my Facebook friends, a lot of whom are soul DJs of different types, saw an awful lot of totally bald heads, with or without a smashing hat, but also a fair few with long greying locks, which all goes to show it’s not about the look, it’s about the music …

You can hear two hours of that fabulous music from the 70s 80s & beyond when my show gets repeated on Gateway this Saturday at 5pm, with a new selection of tracks on the weekly live show, first heard from 7-9pm on Monday – head for “Listen Again” to catch it anytime between the two !
