Neil Gits Short-changed

26th December 2020
Posted by Neil Matthew

It was quite a surreal experience arriving at the studio last Monday, being aware that it was just four days before Xmas and yet it just didn’t feel like it should from previous experiences of hosting shows in December. Normally, I would turn up at this time of year to find the shops mostly still open with dozens of customers scurrying through the Eastgate taking advantage of late night opening to grab last minute presents. The bright twinkling lights and colourful decorations would be in my face the minute I entered the mall and the sound of those excrutiatingly over-familiar songs that I seem to have heard on every shopping trip since September would be invading my poor ears.

No I don’t like Xmas – I think that’s an open secret ! – and yet I missed all that atmosphere this year. It just didn’t feel “right”. Seeing Santa’s half-built grotto on the first floor near the mechanical clock nearly made me feel sad, almost reminiscing for previous years when his weird little helpers would wiggle around in the snow “waving” at me in a slightly menacing way ! But … and it’s a big “But” … I still didn’t play any ‘Festive favourites’ this week …so all was good ! Ho Ho Ho !!!

The date was also December 21st – the “Shortest Day Of The Year” when we had less daylight than any other day in 2020 and though plenty of other days in the last nine months have certainly felt very “dark” it did at least make me feel that despite being a definite “Night Person” , maybe that was the point of a slow but sure return to ‘normality’ ….

So, here are the cracking tunes to get you through another week – soul therapy from the world of soul, jazz-funk & disco from the 70s 80s & beyond. Try and relax and enjoy them – I’ll be back on air with another bunch of goodies on Monday from 7pm !
