Neil Gits Sore Feet !

26th June 2022
Posted by Neil Matthew

Anyone who has been following me on Facebook over the last couple of weeks will know it’s been all about my recent “60th Birthday Road Trip” up north, primarily to take a journey on the famous Settle To Carlisle railway line, travelling across the Yorkshire Dales and the Pennines, through the Eden Valley to the edge of the Lake District – with of course a handful of football club visits either side ! I really enjoyed the three hours there and back, admiring so much of this country’s wonderfully unspoilt scenery through the window, sat there relaxing on a comfy train seat .

However, with a “hop off, hop on” ticket in my pocket I couldn’t resist giving my walking boots a good workout in the process, so elected to alight at Kirkby Stephen, take a healthy stroll down into the village, maybe grab a bacon roll in a nice country cafe and then leisurely wander back up the hill taking an alternative ‘cross field’ route before connecting with the next train on my trip. But it didn’t work out that way ! For starters, there was no sign of the village ahead hiking down the main road for most of the way, then when the first buildings appeared insight there was no hin of anywhere to get food and I had been walking 35 minutes. A small branch of Spar was the first place I came across, so mindful of the time, I grabbed a prawn mayo sandwich and a bottle of Coke and turned straight round, heading back up towards the station on an albeit slightly shorter, but seemingly much steeper footpath, now feeling hot and sweaty in the summer sun, a little stressed that I might miss my train, carrying my lunch in a bag with no time to eat it – and my feet were killing me too !!

Don’t get me wrong it was a fantastic three days away, doing and seeing everything I’d hoped to and then some, but my poor decision to get off at Kirkby Stephen was the definite low point ! I managed to limp round Carlisle rather gingerly but enjoyed my time there before making the return leg to Settle, and even made a second stop on the way back at Appleby, a nice little market town (close to the station!!) although I didn’t stop there long due to it being the first day of their famous Horse Fair and suffice to say I wouldn’t have had the Appleby experience I was hoping for ….

That in itself could be a story for another blog, but I am mainly on here to remind you that I’ll be back live on Gateway this Monday from 7-9pm with two hours of top tunes and that if you missed last week’s show you can catch it via the “Listen Again” page on this website where you can hear these songs and artists :
