Neil Gits Steamy

With no football to go to for the first time since August last year, I was at a loss what to do with my Saturday last weekend, so I decided to have the road trip without the match and headed for the North Norfolk coast where there is a very small club whose ground is nestled between the quay, harbour and seafront and right alongside a miniature railway that ferries holidaymakers and daytrippers back and forth. That should make a good photo, even if there is no game to see ! Or so I thought ….

Much as I enjoyed my day out at Wells-Next-The-Sea, a trouble free drive there and back – no motorways !! – with decent weather and easy parking, lunch with a view and the obligatory chips for tea, there was one little snag – the Wells Harbour Railway closed last summer !! Although it has been replaced by a nice little old school bus, I wasn’t tempted to ride it, but I did discover the Wells & Walshingham Light Railway and with time on my hands had an hour long round trip on that instead !

I had been on a steam train once before in Paignton about 8 years ago, but this was a little more underwhelming with a miniature engine, tiny carriages you can just about squeeze into and a very slow, noisy, bumpy ride between the two villages with very little to see out of the window apart from a few pheasants & a lot of thick undergrowth along the tracks ! Still, it made a change I suppose …

Back in “Old Gits HQ” the next day and I was preparing my latest show as usual which you can hear repeated at 5pm this Saturday or catch up with via ‘Listen Again’. Here’s what I put together for you ….
