Neil Gits Suspended !

21st April 2025
Posted by Neil Matthew

Don’t panic !! “The Old Gits Soul Show” will be live on your radio tonight, as always on a Monday evening from 7-9pm. I haven’t been taking off air because of my regular (and apparently amusing !) technical shortcomings or even for slipping in the odd cringeworthy joke that pushes the “Cheese-o-meter” to the limit. I just wanted to share with you a situation that befell me online recently …

Although at some point in the past I caught up with the rest of the world and developed a reasonable grasp of working online, having acquired my first PC about 10 years after most other people, the last few years have seen me left way behind as technology has evolved at such a rapid pace. I am often left scratching my head, completely baffled by some of the stuff I come across while trying to use the internet & confusing changes made to the way certain sites operate makes even the daily tasks I used to do quite complicated. And yes, the onset of old age probably plays its part too !

I try and keep life simple – I don’t smoke or take drugs, I very rarely drink alcohol and tempting though it is when money is tight, I prefer to hold on to what little cash I have than risk losing it on gambling. I’ve surprisingly become very fond of fresh air and walking, most weeks exploring the world with my camera in hand, and of course I LOVE my soul music and football. I pride myself on a pretty decent knowledge of the latter, but the sport is too unpredictable to chance placing a bet on match results.

However, I do take part in the “Sky Super 6” competition which is free to enter and have twice won the ‘leagues’ in which I have particpated in recent years, but it’s mostly just for fun and the only prize is a carrot-dangling £250,000 should anybody miraculously guess the final scores of six selected games one week ! One Wednesday recently, when feeling uncharacteristically over-confident, I had real trouble logging in and must have clicked one button too many in the wrong order in my haste to enter my ‘winning’ numbers. Then came the shocking news via email …

I was informed that my account had been suspended due to “irregular or suspicious activity” or some such other phrase and I was gob-smacked ! Don’t they know me ? Suspicious ?! Irregular ?! Hardly … ! For over two weeks I was deprived of one of the simple little pleasures in my simple little life, thanks to modern technology not having any common sense, but I am happy to say, after much exchanging of (computer-generated) emails I was finally allowed back in and can happily continue to score less than 10 points out of a possible 30 for the rest of the football season …

If all you need to keep you happy is two hours of soul, jazz-funk & disco from the 70s 80s & beyond on your radio, you know where to head for – here’s the playlist for my most recent show, available now at “Listen Again”
