For some of us there was a much needed boost to lift our sagging spirits this week with the return of the football season seeing all the big boys back in action after their quest for glory was so cruelly truncated back in March. I can concede that not EVERYBODY reading this will have been distraught at having to cope without footy for the last three months, but for those of us permanently afffected by severe football-itis it has been a tough, painful period !
Luckily, I was able to get my fix a little earlier this summer when the German Bundesliga re-started a few weeks ago, a competition I’ve always taken a keen interest in since the early 70s through a school mate whose dad worked in Germany and brought his son copies of “Der Kicker” magazine back which he would share with me (funnily enough I got an A-Level in German about 8 years later !)
However, my enthusiasm for the game doesn’t quite reach the level that I felt the need to follow the Belarus First Division, which carried on unaffected by events in the world, a steady diet of old 70s & 80s “Match Of The Day” episodes, World Football documentaries and even a couple of footy-themed sitcoms kept me going through the dark days. All we need now is for the lower level games to resume so I can continue to follow my son’s journey to becoming an all-time Witham Town legend !!
Of course, my other main passion in life is soul music, and the support for my show in recent weeks has been quite humbling with so many people posting positive messages and submitting inspired requests for me to dig out – thank you all and keep ’em coming !
