Neil Gits That Smell In His Nostrils

19th May 2024
Posted by Neil Matthew

Over my 62 years I’ve been fortunate to have very few health problems to worry about. I think I can count on my fingers (and possibly thumbs too!) the number of times I’ve had to go and see the doctor since I’ve lived away from home and can only think of two nights I’ve ever had to spend in a hospital. However, one minor issue that has followed me right from school days is hayfever. From being 16 and struggling through my exams (which took place right in the peak of the season !) to setting up my DJ business in my 20s, then buying my house and setting up home in my early 30s, summer days could be hell if I found myself in the wrong place at the wrong time and the pollen was rife …

Around 1996 I decided that the little orange tablets I’d always taken were worse than useless and stumbled upon homeopathy via lady I had interviewed on a radio show. It all sounded very interesting and worth trying but a week after I’d switched to taking her recommended ‘medicine’ I suffered probably the worst attack I’ve ever had whilst driving near my home, with totally uncontrollable sneezing and unbearably itchy eyes forcing me to pull over ! That prompted one of my 8 or 9 visits to the doctor who simply suggested I try using a recommended hayfever nasal spray and eye drops that you could buy from Boots and guess what ? I’ve been fine ever since !

OK, I’ve had the odd day when I forgot to take them regularly and the pollen count was high – whoops ! – but generally speaking if I stick to the plan I have no more attacks and indeed over the last five years, I seem to have outgrown it altogether – though I still use them, just in case ! This week is crunch week. I always start the process a week before my birthday as the first major syptoms have always appeared between then and the FA Cup Final, i.e. mid to late May, rather inconveniently, although there is no good time to have a full on hayfever attack … and as this Monday is that day why not tune in to my live show and see if I have a full on sneezing fit and as I respond to all your birthday wishes. You’ll also hear some jolly good tunes too, like these ones :
