Neil Gits The Shakes Cured

You are never too old to learn something new are you ? I didn’t know until last week that my washing machine had a big heavy concrete block inside it ! Having put a regular wash on one Wednesday morning I was baffled to return to the kitchen 90 minutes later and find orange lights flashing on the display and that the code ‘F06’ had appeared. More of a concern was the fact that this coincided with my damp clothes being firmly locked insde behind the glass door and nothing I tried would change that …

I eventually found a nice local chap who was used to dealing with such things and didn’t charge a callout fee, so exactly a week later he popped round and freed my laundry in about two minutes flat, allowing me to gleefully shift it all into the tumble dryer. Problem solved … or was it ? On moving the machine away from the wall to access the electrical circuit where the fault occurred, my man asked me if it had been making a lot of noise lately, which it certainly had – so much so that I’d got in the habit of leaving the house when doing my washing to escape the row – and indeed all the shaking of the kitchen that came with it !

It was then that he showed me the concrete block, situated under the plastic top, which had worked loose from one of its thick bolts and pointed to a pile of grey dust on the carpet where it had been sitting since 2020. I was told that the damage caused in the process would mean a new drum if I wanted it repaired, but it would be cheaper to buy a brand new washing machine, so it made no sense to ask him to fix it. Instead he recommended a shop in Wickford which sells reconditioned home appliances and this week I had a clean, shiny, fresh-smelling Sharp ES-NIB8141WD delivered & installed … and set about catching up on two week’s worth of washing !

Alas, my current budget doesn’t stretch to a brand new machine and I’ve been trying to shift all sorts of stuff in my cluttered home online to help make ends meet. Two days before my old WM conked out, I actually sold my old mobile disco amplifier for EXACTLY the same price as the cost of my new replacement machine, which was frustrating but just how life pans out sometimes. So despite all the encouragement I’ve had from well-meaning friends suggesting I get out on the road and doing DJ gigs again (I haven’t done that for about six years!) that won’t be happening as the amp has acquired a new unepected role in my world by keeping my wardrobe and drawers full of clean clothes !!

Luckily for fans of top quality soul, jazz-funk from the 60s 70s 80s & beyond, I am more than happy to carry on wearing my “DJ hat” in studio 1 at Gateway each Monday where all I have to carry in is a small box of CDs, a USB stick and my weekly playlist – check out the latest one below :
