Neil Gits Third Place

In my previous life, I would often host maybe four quiz nights a week in between my radio shows and the odd DJ gig or race night, but as you know, the only part of my portfolio that remains from 2020 is “The Old Gits Soul Show” which I somehow managed to keep broadcasting live every Monday throughout “The Apocalypse”. However, since my official retirement in December 2021, I have found myself dabbling in the odd quiz again – but this time from the other side of the microphone !

My son Nathan, pops down from Colchester every few weeks and we meet up for a pub meal at one of my locals where they run a half-decent quiz on a Wednesday. He attends one every week at University on a Sunday night and recently even attempted to host a version of “The Chase” as part of a 60 hour charity telethon there which went out live online ! So he is quite ‘tuned in’ to the sort of questions that get asked and the categories that drop up on our midweek visits usually quite suit a 61 year old and his 20 year old ‘Retro Boy’ son !!

Sadly, we never do quite well enough to manage finishing more than about halfway up a final table of a dozen teams or so, but it’s still an enjoyable night out that breaks up the routine a little. This week however, we stormed up to third place (albeit equal third with two other teams !) and most impressively were only three points away from winning – the hugs and high fives that followed suggested we had just won the Wimbledon Men’s Doubles !!

Everyone’s a winner on a Monday night or Saturday evening on Gateway ! No, there are no prizes given out, not even for the ‘infamous’ “Soul Connection” feature, but how can you lose with two hours of soul, jazz-funk & disco from the 70s 80s & beyond live from 7pm on Monday and repeated today (Saturday) at 5pm ?
