Neil Gits Three Inches

17th December 2022
Posted by Neil Matthew

Well, that was an interesting week ! Last Sunday evening I went out for about 4 hours, making good use of A13 Annie’s Sky Q box as usual to catch up with some “must-see ” telly that I can’t access at “Old Git Towers”. Okay, it was jolly cold, so much so that I put the plastic windscreen cover on my car whilst parked in Chafford Hundred, just in case I returned later to find a bit of frost, but there was no sign of any ‘moisture’ in the air, so you can imagine the look of shock on my face three hours later to find all the vehicles in the car park aboslutely thick with snow, along with all the pavements and bushes and just about anything else in sight ! I certainly didn’t see that coming !

Once I got mobile again, after much scraping and brushing, it was a long nervous crawl in awful driving conditions out of Thurrock and back East along the A13, rarely getting above 25 mph – until I reached the Pitsea Flyover when cars started hitting their normal speeds and white fields and verges returned to their more familiar greeny/brown look in the moonlight. When I got home and found everything there just as I’d left it 4-5 hours previously, I almost wondered if I’d had some bizarre dream, but getting out of the car I noticed about three inches worth of snow still covering the roof which was swiftly dispatched onto the front lawn – where it still sits as I write this, a white icy mound stubbornly refusing to shift in 7 days of sub-zero temperatures …

I’ve been out and about a couple of times since and its incredible how different the weather conditions are further West than me, with much snow still very visible on footpaths and gardens – I even managed to get the car temporarily stuck on a patch of ice on a slope in Billericay !! – but here at home everything looks normal, unless I get up too early and catch a glimpse of some very severe frosts, although that doesn’t happen very much I can assure you !!

We live on a small island in this country and yet our friends and neighbours from nearby towns can be experiencing completely different weather to us … really fascinating, just like the various facts and figures I embelish my show with each week ! You can hear some of these gems along with some truly awesome soul tunes from the good old days right now if you check out the “Listen Again” section on this website, with the ‘Repeat Play’ available from 5-7pm most Saturdays on 97.8FM or DAB Radio across Essex.
