Neil Gits To 600

11th September 2022
Posted by Neil Matthew

The next time I set foot in Studio One at Gateway it will be to present my 600th selection of soul, jazz-funk & disco music from the 70s 80s and beyond on “The Old Gits Soul Show”, the first one having gone out on air on 27th September. It certainly feels like almost 12 years ago, an awful lot has happened in my life since then – my son Nathan was 6 years old then and used to come along to the studio with me each week after picking him up from Primary School in my busy life and now he is 18 and will be starting at University in Colchester come October ! But 600 shows ? Wow! That is 1200 hours , an awful lot of music … and I’d like to think I’ve never played one really duff track in all that time !!

Though the show has always had regular listeners who get in contact each week, the changes in technology and explosion of social media has made it much more common for soul fans to interact with the show, either engaging in soulful chit-chat on Facebook or maybe submitting their own ideas of songs to play that bring back special memories of “our era” and some have actually become genuine friends who I have met up with socially from time to time – indeed I have quite a list now of those who I have promised to meet up for a drink or a meal with and ‘talk tuneage’ !

If by chance, this is the first time you’ve read a “Cool Soul” blog or only just recently discovered the show, by all means do get in touch and join our happy band of good music lovers. There is a dedicated group page on Facebook you can join called “The Old Gits Soul Show” which I am on regularly or if you want to contact me during the live show you can email [email protected] , text (01268)833978 or send a message via this website using the “contact us” section. Oh … and of course you can “Listen Again” to any of the episodes broadcast over the previous 28 days at your leisure – it sounds weird, but I still do that myself every week just to see if there’s anything I can improve on !! Tune in on Monday at 7pm for the 600th show – in the meantime here’s what I played on the 599th ….
