Neil Gits To Be A Spy

1st September 2023
Posted by Neil Matthew

It wasn’t something that I had on my so-called “Bucket List” for this year, but by a set of happy coincidences I found myself going ‘undercover’ on my latest football trip last Saturday and carrying out a reconnaissance mission for a friend. Naturally, I can’t give you too many specific details or I would have to kill you …

As always, I chose my match very carefully as I continue to attempt to see as many games in as many different leagues & cups as possible, right the way across the country during the season. Quite by chance, I realized that the away team are hosting a side where I have one of my many contacts in the non-league football world in the FA Cup tomorrow, a competition where each win can net the victorioous club a significant amount of increasing prize money round by round, so I got in touch and offered to provide any useful information I could gather …

Going ‘undercover’ was not a problem on this occasion – it absolutely lashed it down with rain pre-kick off and during most of the game itself ! I put my trusty pack-a-mack on and tied the hood firmly up round my chin and forehead, just in case anyone recognized me … and of course to keep as dry as possible ! Taking notes proved near impossible, but I am blessed with a good memory and dictated my observations onto my voice recorder once safely back in my dry warm car. Let’s hope the result goes the right way for my mate’s team – or I will have some serious egg on my face – and not just from rushing down my Big Boy Breakfast en route to this weekend’s fixture !

A careful listen to last Monday’s show might have you spotting a situation where I also might have had some metaphorical yolk dribbling down my chin ! However, being a confirmed “Old Git” I am blaming modern technology having a mind of its own and toying with me in the studio. Hear this memorable moment in broadcasting history and more importantly some jolly fine tunes on the ‘Repeat Play’ at 5pm on Saturday or whenever you wish, before or after, by using our “listen Again” section. Here is this week’s team-sheet … sorry … playlist !!
