This is definitely “getting out weather”. Even if the heat is TOO hot (and a couple of days lately temperatures have been outrageously high) it’s still a great idea to head off in the car somewhere (anywhere!) and just savour the air con, pumping it up to 11 ! More recently it has been almost perfect summer weather for being more adventurous, visiting new places for a good old stroll around with the camera, and with it hovering around the low 20s, I’ve been quite “snap happy”. Yes, the “Wednesday Wander” road trips are well and truly back !
This week, I ended up in the Windsor area where I took a record 127 photos in one day (!) and had some tricky route-following to get where I wanted to be when I wanted to be there due to the location of the River Thames and a limited number of bridges to cross it, unlike in the City of London. It helped though having spent an afternoon and evening in Slough back in January, a town you normally enter via the same exit of the M4 as Windsor, and certain place names and landmarks began to ring bells as I weaved under and over the motorway. What struck me most though is just how close the mean the urban streets of Slough town centre are to the tranquil historic village of Eton – I reckon you could probably walk from Slough railway station to the iconic College Chapel in about half an hour !
This “joining of the dots” has also come in handy on other trips into the unknown this year where I have been “fairly near” before across the last couple of years and a little previous familiarity has proved helpful in maintaining my bearings – with of course a good selection of soul CDs in the car being essential for keeping your composure in unknown territory ! Listen out for some great little gems of tunes discovered on my travels over the next few months – I’ve been playing a fair bit of lovers rock on my in-car player lately, so “The Old Gits Reggae Bit” will definitely be continuing through August !
