The older you get, the more you find yourself saying “You don’t seem to see those any more” as life moves on, technology advances at a rapid pace and things that used to be common place quietly disappear off the face of the planet. I suppose some obvious ones would be fax machines, film cameras, cigarette machines in pubs and working red phone boxes (as opposed to the ones used for defibrilators or mini-libraries !) I notice quite a few things when watching old TV shows made about 25-30 years ago where characters play a message on an answerphone or maybe watch a film on a VHS video tape and only last night a sketch from a comedy show showed a man paying by credit card for something in a shop by signing a piece of paper produced by one of those plastic contraptions on the counter – when did you last see THAT happen ?!
One thing I saw that caught me out recently was when I was parked at Tesco Mayflower on the A127, sitting in my car enjoying my latest Clubcard Meal Deal ahead of my show. I normally read my football paper while having lunch, but I was on a bit of tight schedule, so I just tucked in quickly whilst aimlessly looking around at life outside the windows and noticed that the car next to me was displaying a tax disc. I didn’t give it much of a thought until I realized “Hang on, you don’t put them on your car any more !” and looked again – it expired in June 2015 ! The owner had clearly never bothered to remove it when taxing the vehicle online for the first time about 9 years ago …
I am all about nostalgia when it comes to the music on my show, hoping to stir a few memories for you with carefully chosen ‘forgotten favourites’ from the 70s & 80s – admittedly alongside a couple of new 21st Century soul tunes each week which have that traditional feel. Sometimes I do refer to old stuff that’s disppeared from our lives in between too – I’d love to hear from you during the show this Monday if you used to be inseparable from an old ‘hi tech’ gadget that’s long since been sent off for recycling, especially if your fond memories are accompanied by a particular cool soul song of that era ! As ever, here’s the latest playlist from last week …
